Waterproofing Preparation & Care
Here are some rules to go by, to ensure your guarantee and manufacturers specifications are not compromised.
Before we apply waterproofing:
- The rooms need to be completely sheeted with preferably no more than a 10mm expansion gap at the wall floor junction (corner between wall and floor).
- These areas need to be free from all building rubble and swept clean, and any major holes (eg. tap/mixer penetrations to be filled with an expanding foam prior to installation).
- All wall joints need to be plastered including the shower recess and nail/screw holes.
- All pipe penetrations in a concrete slab need to be filled with an appropriate product to eliminate any void or irregularity in the surface of the slab.
- Adequate access to the areas is essential for providing quality finish and a safe working environment. For applications to retaining walls, it is essential that we have a clear access for visual inspection of work taking place.
After we apply waterproofing:
- An acrylic membrane system (generally used in wet areas with straight stick down tiling) needs two days for application and a further 3 days to cure to manufacturers specifications, therefore a total of 5 days. (if this is not adhered to, the manufacturers will dishonor their guarantee, as will we).
- As a rule any acrylic membrane applied to a floor will have signs posted with messages for other tradesman, requesting nobody enter the room/s until the membranes are fully cured.
- If there is a need to enter the room prior to it being tiled, placement of a suitable protection (Fibro or Gyprock squares) on any membraned areas to protect them from penetration by those entering to perform work, or debris during work. Ideally the floor should be tiled before any other work is conducted.
